More than 30 years after the collapse of apartheid in South Africa, there are still some whites who bemoan its passing.

“It was a good time, because we had no crime. There were no problems. People, blacks and whites, got on very well with each other. Everything worked”.

This myopic nostalgia, expressed here by Errol Musk, father of Elon, is not untypical among a hardcore of older South Africans whose affluent lifestyles shielded them from the brutal realities afflicting the majority of the population under white rule.

It is a view shared by the US president, who this week exposed his ignorance in a showdown with South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, in a meeting in the Oval Office recorded live by the global press.
