If you were not aware of the existence of the Sentencing Council before, you will almost certainly be aware by now, as its recent assault on equality under the law has provoked angry headlines and intense public concern. The Sentencing Council is one of those innumerable discreet backroom committees that exercise significant power over our lives, increasingly more so than the baying narcissists on the parliamentary benches who are our supposed lawmakers.
