Here’s an IAEA statement issued on Thursday which you may have missed: “Based on information available there has been no radiation leak from any nuclear facility in Pakistan”.

If you were following the hostilities between Pakistan and India closely, you might breathe a sigh of relief at the news. If you weren’t, perhaps your reaction might be: “Wait! What radiation leak?”

Unconfirmed reports of an Indian air strike on a Pakistani base which is reported to be used to store nuclear weapons may just be part of the sometimes-hysterical claims on both sides which took place during four days of fighting last week. Nevertheless, they are believed by tens of millions of people.

At a dinner on Wednesday evening, I was approached by an Indian businessman desperate to know if I could confirm the radiation leak news because he was worried for his family who were “downwind” of where the strike took place in the Punjab.
