Temporary Peace Through Weakness: It’s a lousy slogan and an even worse strategy, but if the Europeans, including the British, do not raise taxes to pay for defence, that’s all they might have. This week, they were given a sharp reality check.

Everything being said about the Trump plan to end the Ukraine-Russia war over the weekend should be seen through the prism of one sentence uttered by US Secretary for Defence, Pete Hegseth, in Brussels on Wednesday: “Stark strategic realities prevent the United States of America from being primarily focused on the security of Europe.”

The rest falls into place - the primary focus is on the American economy and on China. Washington wants more money to meet the challenge of China’s rise in the Pacific, not Russian aggression in Europe.
