Starmer is blindsided by his fatal attraction towards Brussels

The PM's diplomatic words about the US and EU at the Lord Mayor's Banquet rang hollow.

“Against the backdrop of these dangerous times, the idea that we must choose between our allies – that somehow we’re with either America or Europe – is plain wrong. I reject it utterly.”

In those words, delivered at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet, Sir Keir Starmer sought to fudge the issue that is beginning to embarrass him: the question of whose side he will be on from next January, when Donald Trump starts imposing tariffs and generally getting tough with countries he sees as exploiting America. He followed up this evasive statement with some warm words about the special relationship with America.
