Starmer ignores number one rule of politics: do not alienate your base

Starmer’s speech on migration (via Lauren Hurley / No 10 Downing Street)

Welcome to the week in three totally inexplicable stories.

Why does Qatar gifting a “flying palace” to the American president not count as corruption?

Why did Kamala Harris decide that now was the time to prove how out of touch Democrats are by attending the obscenely opulent Met Gala?

And just what in the holy name of Pope Bob IX does Keir Starmer think he’s doing?

On Monday, the Prime Minister came off the bad result of the Runcorn and Helsby by-election to give his already notorious “island of strangers” speech, in which he promised another crackdown to reduce immigration into the UK.

It looks like polling numbers, the surge in support for Reform, and fears about the next election are getting in the way of delivering things for the people who elected him.
