Like the rest of the world, I was shocked when Donald Trump broke decades of diplomatic protocol by speaking directly to the president of Taiwan, angering China. It seemed yet another accidental gaffe born out of inexperience and carelessness.
But Tim Marshall, former diplomatic editor of Sky news and author of numerous books about global politics and history, had other ideas. At first, he too was unimpressed. Then Trump’s phone call with President Tsai Ing-Wen of Taiwan started to make a lot more sense.
