Labour’s mission to “turbocharge” the arts is yet to take off and hopes that the new government would reverse the cultural decline under years of Tory rule appear to have been over-optimistic.

Reports last weekend that Keir Starmer wants to abolish the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and split it between the business department, the education department and the Treasury, suggest a lack of commitment to our cultural life.
