Labour must do more to champion the arts
It is 60 years since Scottish Labour MP Jennie Lee, became Britain’s first arts minister. Starmer should borrow from her playbook.
Labour’s mission to “turbocharge” the arts is yet to take off and hopes that the new government would reverse the cultural decline under years of Tory rule appear to have been over-optimistic.
Reports last weekend that Keir Starmer wants to abolish the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and split it between the business department, the education department and the Treasury, suggest a lack of commitment to our cultural life.
