The US State Department’s updated travel advice, issued on Wednesday, told us what might be coming, but not when. Now we know.

Overnight, Israel has launched waves of air strikes against Iran targeting its air defence systems, nuclear programme, and military facilities including some of its ballistic missile sites in a bid to degrade Tehran’s ability to hit back. At least three top commanders have been killed in what looks like a devastating attack.

Among the targets is the Natanz complex in central Iran, one of the country’s two main nuclear sites. Tehran was also hit several times with the HQ of the Revolutionary Guards targeted. Iranian media says the head of the Guards, Major General Hossein Salami, was killed. The military’s chief of staff, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, was also killed as were two nuclear scientists.
