The viral video of Boris Johnson being attacked by an ostrich, in a vignette reminiscent of the iconic 1976 encounter between Michael Parkinson and Rod Hull’s Emu, almost seemed like a parable of the embattled political class. To say that that class has forfeited the confidence of the public would be an understatement.
