Derek Owusu – Favourite Things

Derek Owusu is a British author and podcaster. His debut novel, That Reminds Me, came out in 2019 and was awarded the Desmond Elliott Prize. He edited and contributed to the book Safe: On Black British Men Reclaiming Space and is the former co-host of the literature podcast Mostly Lit. His first children’s book, About This Boy, co-written with Rudimental band member Leon “Locksmith” Rolle is out in February 2022.

These are a few of Derek Owusu’s favourite things...

Books

I didn’t start reading until I was 24; I hated books before that. I suddenly fell in love with reading after reading a short story called St Mawr by D H Lawrence, written in 1925. I don’t know how it happened – it was like when you know you love someone, but you can’t explain how it happened. I remember reading that book, and afterwards, I knew that I was going to be reading for the rest of my life. Nowadays, I’ll read anything as long as the writing is good, but I tend to lean towards literary fiction. 

Perfume 

I am obsessed with scents. I like how just a small whiff can bring back so many feelings, thoughts and memories; it’s really powerful how they can elicit so many emotions. I collect niche perfumes from perfume houses and want to create my own one day. My favourite scent is Intoxicated by Kilian; it is the best smell in the world. 

Cinema food 

I have always loved films and television shows. I used to have a Cineworld black card and go to the cinema all the time but when the pandemic started I lost the habit a bit. I love cinema food too – I get everything a drink, popcorn, a hot dog, a slushie and nachos. You have to make the most of it whilst you’re there. Today, I would probably say my favourite film is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

The London Underground 

I moved to London from Sussex when I was eight, and the London underground has become one of my favourite places. I don’t love it at rush hour, but I find it really relaxing when the carriage is quiet and smooth, and I’m reading my book or listening to music. If I am going somewhere far and can just chill, the time flies. I also love going to the South Bank, sitting down, and just people watching. I write there sometimes.

The future

I wouldn’t call myself a negative person, but I can definitely be cynical and suspicious. This morning though, I woke up in a really good mood, which can be rare. I feel so grateful for the rest of the day that hasn’t happened yet, and everything in the future. I have absolutely nothing planned today which is nice, but I know something good will happen.
