Corbynistas hit peak stupid with attacks on Sadiq Khan
Sadiq Khan is playing a bit of a blinder as Mayor of London. This is a surprise to those of us who were sceptics when he was fighting Zac Goldsmith in the pre-Brexit London elections that now feel as though they happened in another century. But since taking office he has made a good start. He was applauded when he opened Boris Johnson’s night tube the other day and he has developed an easy and likeable style.
For the Labour party that is being driven at high speed off a cliff by the vain Jeremy Corbyn, Khan offers rare and genuine good news. Or so one might have thought. In Corbynistaland that is not how these things work. The Mayor was booed at a party hustings when he dared to say that he backing Corbyn’s challenger Owen Smith. It is permissible, or it should be in a normal party, for people to back different candidates. Corbynistas have even been calling him a “red Tory,” the ultimate insult of choice for the intellectually-challenged drongo on the Labour far left or Scottish Nationalist idiot wing.
This Corbynista attack is so stupid and counterproductive that it is difficult to know where to start. Khan is a clear election winner, and no he did not win thanks to Corbyn.
It becomes clearer by the day that among the idealists who have joined Labour to reject the conventional party and economic system are some who are just downright dense. These are people who make the most basic of mistakes, confusing rally size with popularity. Wake up. Activists and real voters are not the same. Get a grip. Ed Miliband got hammered in England. In the kind of seats Labour needs to win next time the preening Corbyn (loving the attention) and his hard left henchmen will get smashed to smithereens. The real hardliners don’t care, of course. They are fighting for Socialist revolution and the tyranny which always accompanies it. The naive idealists being dragged along by them are in for quite an education about England and politics in the next few years. The Tories are in heaven.
What is Khan himself up to? It’s quite simple. The Mayor has accumulated quite a bit of political capital and he is spending some of it on a down-payment on a future labour leadership bid. If the Corbynistas were smart they would co-opt him and learn from his popularity in London. Instead they boo him because he calls out their deluded hero.
