America lacks an inspiring opposition leader
The Democrats need a political bruiser, the kind of politician who will do the circuit, day after day, kicking shins and voicing opposition to Trump.
On 17 May 2017, a relatively little-known congressman from Texas took Articles of Impeachment to the floor of the House of Representatives and charged President Donald J Trump with “undermin[ing] the integrity of his office” over the sacking of FBI Director, James Comey.
It was a significant moment but not, it turned out, for the right reasons.
Once he’d presented his case, the Congressman allowed his motion to lapse without a vote. It was an entirely symbolic act that would only resonate years later, in 2019, when Democrats did impeach Trump over his attempt to link the supply of missiles to Ukraine with a proposed investigation, to be instigated by President Zelensky, into Joe Biden.
